Definition Numerical

Numerical data is expressed in numerical values ( = numbers). Not every sequence of digits is numerical – for example, zip codes or street numbershave no actual numerical value.

Numerical does not necessarily always equal ordinal– ordinal data refer to numerical data which is interval-scaled. In terms of levels of measurement, numerical values only appear in ordinal scales and upwards – nominal values can never be numerical.

Please note that the definitions in our statistics encyclopedia are simplified explanations of terms. Our goal is to make the definitions accessible for a broad audience; thus it is possible that some definitions do not adhere entirely to scientific standards.
