Coal is by far the largest contributor to power sector emissions in Germany. In 2022, coal-fired electricity generation produced 148.4 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e), or roughly 66 percent of Germany's power sector emissions. From 2000 through 2022, coal power emissions in Germany fell by roughly 40 percent. Meanwhile, gas power emissions almost doubled during this period to 47.2 MtCO₂e.
