It was estimated that overdose fatalities connected to the opioid epidemic resulted in a loss of 8.2 billion U.S. dollars in federal tax revenues in 2016. Opioid overdose fatalities caused the greatest financial loss to individuals and the private sector with just over 31 billion dollars.
