GDP per capita disparities by European region 1820-1913
Throughout the nineteenth century, Western Europe's industrialization and economic development saw GDP per capita in Southern Europe and Eastern Europe fall even further behind the west. In 1820, GDP per capita in Southern and Eastern Europe was 62 and 60 percent of Western Europe's level, respectively; by the eve of the First World War in 1913, they had fallen to 47 and 46 percent.
