Production of barley in South Africa 2000-2019
As of 2019, South Africa produced 345 thousand metric tons of barley, down from 422 thousand metric tons in the year before. An overall increasing trend on the production of barley, with several drops, was registered since 2000. In 2010, the production amounted to 194 thousand metric tons, which was followed by a significant increase in 2011 of approximately 61 percent. This can be linked to better yields along with a growth on production in Western Cape, which is considered the major barley producing state. Moreover, the slight decline in 2013 can be attributed to a fall in the number of hectares of planted barley.
