Decline in freedom in Africa 2023, by country
Libya recorded the highest decline in freedom in Africa. During 2023, Libya lost 32 points in the Freedom Index, which takes into account political rights and civil liberties, whose totals are weighted to determine what the freedom status of a country or a terriroty is. Libya is considered overall a partly-free country. Other high losses in freedom have been registered in Tanzania, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
