Number of member states in NATO 1949-2024
As of 2024, there are 32 member states in NATO following the ascension of Sweden on March 7, 2024. The western military alliance was formed in the aftermath of World War Two, its founding members included Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. After various stages of enlargement, the alliance has more than doubled in size, with the largest enlargement occurring in 2004 when the alliance welcomed seven new countries.
