Gas is the most common fuel type used for electricity generation in Ireland, accounting for almost half of the total electricity output in 2021. That year, 1.3 million metric tons of oil equivalent gas were used to fire electricity producing turbines. Meanwhile, usage of renewable sources increased from 161,000 metric tons in 2005 to approximately one million metric tons in 2021, accounting for 35 percent of Ireland's electricity generation.
