Domestic production of crude oil
The level of domestic production of crude oil remarkably decreased in recent years , even though the decline was not steady over time. In 2005, 6,084 thousand tons of crude oil were produced in Italy. Then, the production decreased until 2009 before experiencing a constant increase until 2014. In the following years, the domestic output of crude oil dropped again, reaching an all-time low of 3,746 thousand tons in 2016, before slightly increasing in 2017.
Crude oil reserves and imports
Also, the oil reserves in Italy decreased from 577 million barrels in 2011 to 571 million barrels in 2017. Regarding crude oil imports, the Middle East was the main crude oil supplier to Italy. As a matter of fact, the region accounted for 41.6 percent of the total imports in 2017.
