Because different strains of influenza circulate each season it is necessary to get a new influenza vaccination each year and the effectiveness of the vaccine varies from year to year. Nevertheless, the flu vaccine is the most effective way to protect against flu and related complications and is recommended for almost everyone, especially children, older adults, and those with chronic health conditions. However, despite its wide availability and proven safety and effectiveness only 39 percent of Canadians reported receiving an influenza immunization in the past year in 2020, which was the highest rate over the past two decades. Rates of immunization are much higher among older adults, with up to 70 percent of those aged 65 years and older receiving a flu shot in 2021, compared to 32 percent of those aged 18 to 64 years. A survey from 2021 found that the three most common responses as to why Canadian adults did not receive an influenza vaccination are “I am healthy/never get the flu”, “no specific reason, just didn’t get it”, and “I didn’t get around to it”.
