Per capita consumption of milk in Sweden 2010-2021
Declining milk production
In the period from 2011 to 2021, the production volume of drinking milk declined slightly in Sweden. By contrast, the share of organic drinking milk grew strongly since 2013. In 2018, a volume of around 754 thousand tons of drinking milk was produced, of which a share of 18.4 percent was organic milk. Organic milk comes from cows that are not treated with antibiotics and hormones and are on the pasture around 120 days a year.
Producer prices
The producer prices of regular drinking milk and organic drinking milk differ just a little from each other. In 2021, the producer price of organic milk in Sweden amounted to around 470 Swedish kronor per 100 kilograms, whereas the producer price of conventional milk was around 418 Swedish kronor per 100 kilograms. The relatively small price difference in production might be a reason for the trend of growing organic milk production in the country.
