Number of people exposed to river flooding in the EU 2020-2100, by scenario
The population exposed to river flooding in the European Union (including the UK) could double or even triple by 2100 when compared to 2020, if no adaptation measures are taken. For a warming scenario of 3ÂșC, it is forecast that more than 480 thousand would be exposed in the region in a no-adaptation scenario. In contrast, the EU population exposed to river floods would lie between 90 and 100 thousand people per year in a scenario where adaptation measures are undertaken, with little variation across warming scenarios.
